Cake friends,
We had a great time celebrating Cake Zine’s second birthday at the Invisible Dog Art Center in Cobble Hill last Thursday. Thank you to everyone who scooped up tickets so quickly and joined us to hear pieces from our first four issues: Sexy Cake, Wicked Cake, Humble Pie, and Tough Cookie.
There were tales of camgirls, hungry sharks, snapping nudes, and overcoming grief. A menu from the pages of our archive: Fudgy chocolate tortes dolloped with whipped cream, thick slices of spam musubi pie, cherry jam-smeared black forest cake, and glistening guava hard candy cookies. Like any good two-year-old’s birthday party, we sang happy birthday over a big, frosting-heavy grocery store sheet cake. Unlike most birthday parties, this one made it into a New York Times Styles story on sold-out readings in the city.
We’re grateful to Lucian Zayan for hosting us at the Invisible Dog, our contributors who read so beautifully, our event producers Kacie Paganelli and Danielle Levy, Blxxm for the striking florals, and the brands who generously kept the party stocked with drinks: Canetta, Talea Beer Co, Curious Elixirs, and Ruby. Read on for some photos from the night by Marisa Langley, plus a few more updates.
At the reading, sales of Colonial Cake prints and Wicked Cake raised $240 to support the Almadhoun family’s soup kitchens in Gaza, with further direct donations made during the evening. We’re matching the $240 with an additional donation to Anera, and hope to release the few remaining prints for sale to support Palestinian aid on our website soon. More updates to come.
