Cake crew,
We have so much to catch up on. For starters: Our first non-magazine piece of merch is here to immortalize Sohla El-Waylly’s death by chocolate cake recipe from Wicked Cake in all its gothic glory. We’ve long been admirers of Social Species, a Brooklyn-based design studio and print collective helmed by Miles Barretto and Vivian Yang, and couldn’t be more thrilled to have them design these metal band-inspired shirts. Pre-orders are open now, and supplies are limited!
Cake Zine launched earlier this year as a literary magazine, but we started dreaming up our parties even before we’d locked down a printer. After all, cake is a party food, and there’s nothing like gathering together over something sweet. So, if you’re based in New York, join us on November 10th to celebrate the launch of our second volume.
If you were at the Sexy Cake launch party at Honey’s back in April, you know that we're committed to a good time. This year, the launch party happens to fall on Aliza’s birthday (and Tanya's was just last week) so we're doing it even bigger for us and all the Scorpios in our lives: more cake, more tattoo artists, more DJs, and more room to dance.
Cake Zine Launch Party
Issue 2: Wicked Cake
Nov. 10, 8PM - 2AM
Farm to People
1100 Flushing Ave
The Wicked Cake launch party will run from 8 p.m.–2 a.m., featuring cakes by Yung Kombucha, Lolo, Frosted Hag, and A Balcony in Brooklyn. DJs Kat Offline, Yumi, and Amelia Holt will soundtrack the evening, and @halfbackwards and @martiancum will be on hand to provide permanent party favors from special wicked cake flash. We’ll be selling lots of Wicked Cake issues, plus the very last copies of Sexy Cake, and you can pick up your pre-ordered death by chocolate t-shirts too. Come early to sign up for a limited tattoo slot at 8 p.m., catch readings from the issue at 8:45 p.m., then stick around for cake (there will be a vegan option) and dancing.
This party is at the sprawling warehouse and restaurant powering Farm to People, a subscription-based grocery delivery service providing sustainably-grown produce directly from regional farmers to doorsteps. Farm to People’s fresh-picked fall fruit (pears! grapes! persimmons!) will be featured in each of the cakes at our party, plus they’re offering a discount code for Cake Zine readers who haven’t tried the service before: use CAKEZINE to get $15 off your first Farm to People order.
Finally, we’ve received some wonderful press for Wicked Cake so far: Hear co-founders Aliza and Tanya on the TASTE podcast, read about Tanya’s deranged levels of sugar consumption in her Grub Street Diet, find other gift ideas for the food-lover in your life and a special Cake Zine shout-out in The Cut, and play with cake decorating tips with our Garmentory interview.
Please RSVP here if you can make it to the party, and bring all your cake-loving loved ones. And don’t forget to bring a tote bag for your zines.
See you on the dance floor,
The Cake Zine Team
