totally agree. Whoever wrote the article must have never made a cake, tiered or not. They are so labor intensive! Not to mention they likely have never ordered from any of these bakeries; in particular, From Lucie is frequently delicious, no matter what you get. Looking forward to trying the other spots, they look amazing (to me at least)!
I do worry about someone who hates creative cakes so much that they felt the need to write a negative article about cakes they can't afford and don't understand. Also... What editor okay-ed this? I would say nevermind justifying the cost. That's irrelevant and unnecessary. Nobody owes her an explanation or a defense of their work. If it's a luxury she cannot afford or wouldn't buy if she could, that is her business, but it's in poor taste to essentially rant and degrade bakers and artists for their creativity and very hard work and experience primarily because it doesn't fit her idea of what a cake should be. If you don't like it, don't buy it; order from Publix or Whole Foods, the end. Hating a genre of cake because it exists...? Oy. I love Cake Zine. 🌻
I looked up every single baker you linked here and I think all their cakes look amazing. Imagine writing an article complaining about cute cakes. Some people just hate joy. Keep baking!
Great response. The punching down with those links ➡️ makers is extremely weird and amateur. Reach out for comment people. Do the Grub/Cut Slack channels ever cross paths? Is there a break room to talk about this at NY Mag. I’d be shocked if anybody who writes or cares about food and commerce would have OKd this.
Really thoughtful response here, thanks for taking the time.

I just like cake. I don't care how it looks. I kind of trust a cake that has defeated its maker. But I'm a guy and old so what do I know?
yes!

I’m not bothering to read that article but I did start following the bakers you linked so I guess thanks The Cut for more fun cakes in my feed! 😬
