Picture poor Bruce Bogtrotter, forced by the sadistic Madame Trunchbull to devour a massive chocolate cake in front of the entire school. Or Marie Antoinette, infamously instructing the starving French populace to eat cake (well, probably brioche).
Cake Zine launched in April with Sexy Cake, an ode to desserts as a seductive source of pleasure. Our second issue, to be released in Fall 2022, is dedicated to a darker side: Wicked Cake. We’re excited to announce that we are officially seeking pitches for all types of written and visual work! And we’re paying our contributors.
Like Sexy Cake, our second volume will contain a wide array of creative work inspired by the history, culture, and literature of cake. We invite broad interpretations of “wickedness” that push the boundaries of how cake is understood and consumed today. How does cake converge and collide with excess, punishment, death rituals, and witchcraft? How do these intersections play out in diet culture, food systems, the restaurant industry, pop culture, and in our daily lives? What’s the deal with “devil’s food cake” anyway? Let’s find out.
Please see this pitch guide for detailed information on what to include in your submission and what types of content we are interested in. Pitches are due by 9 a.m. EST on July 20, but we will gladly accept submissions prior to the deadline. We’re thrilled to welcome a few new team members for this issue: editors Jesse Sparks and Angeline Rodriguez, and social media editor Dominique Evans.
And if you’re still looking to pick up a copy of Sexy Cake, limited stock is available for purchase online now. Get it before it’s gone!
